The Internet is Beseiged by Bots: Buying a Domain Name
The day after I registered a domain name I looked at my analytics and there was a LOT of traffic. An alarming amount. I immediately asked an LLM if this was expected. And some of these requests were legitimate and reasonable: like all of the DNS servers needing to register the domain. But some were not. Like why did requests from single IP addresses back to multiple junky websites? There were also an inordinate amount of requests from certain foreign countries, for example Russia. Why was I getting so many requests from Russia about my tiny little domain? Why were so many of the requests sniffing for Wordpress manifests? (Apparently a lot of security researchers are sending requests as well.) And then there was the warning from my domain provider about bots that would try to hijack my domain to send out emails. So I ended up not even enabling the MX protocol. It’s a jungle out there.
For the time being I’ve just decided to remove most of the identifying information from this blog, and keep this as a static site.
So welcome, if you are here because I directed you here!
And if you’re a nefarious actor on the internet trying to make some kind of tiny dent on this huge crazy world from your keyboard: you might want change your strategy. Using your energy for good will make you feel better.
